Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru: Nanocoating Solutions for Bathroom Hygiene

Kempegowda International Airport, one of India's busiest airports, faced significant challenges with unsightly stains on urinals, taps, and sinks due to hard water deposits and high usage, resulting in increased maintenance costs and negative feedback from travellers. To address these issues, Vetro Power provided a nanocoating solution that prevents stains and provides long-term antimicrobial protection, ensuring a cleaner and more hygienic environment at the airport.

Introduction

Bangalore International Airport, officially known as Kempegowda International Airport, is one of India's busiest airports, serving millions of passengers annually. The airport faced persistent issues with staining on urinals, taps, and sinks due to hard water deposits and high usage. These stains were unsightly, difficult to remove, and led to increased maintenance efforts and costs, as well as negative feedback from travellers. Alongwith stain repellency, ensuring a hygienic environment was also paramount, requiring a solution that could provide long-term antimicrobial protection.

In answer to this need, Vetro Power in India was successfully awarded the contract after a tender process to supply a nanocoating solution for preventing stains and providing antimicrobial protection to the Bengaluru International Airport.

Why Vetro Power Glass & Ceramic Nanocoating?

  • Superior Stain Resistance: By creating a superhydrophobic & oleophobic layer, post-application, the urinals, taps, and sinks show remarkable stain resistance preventing water, soap, scum & urine spots as well as mineral deposits.
  • Antimicrobial Protection: The coating inhibits the growth of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, crucial for maintaining hygiene in high-traffic airports, creating a safer, cleaner environment for passengers and staff.
  • Increased Longevity of Fixtures: The protective nanocoating increased the durability & lifespan of fixtures. It safeguarded surfaces against environmental damage and wear, extending their service life and reducing maintenance costs.
  • Cost Efficiency: Reduced cleaning and maintenance resulted in significant cost savings in cleaning chemical & labour cost savings. The initial investment in Vetro Power’s Nanocoating provide cost-effective, offering long-term benefits that outweighed the initial expenditure tenfold.

Feedback:

  • After 6 months, Vetro Power has received positive feedback from the respective department at the airport.
  • Nanocoating is not altering the look of the fixtures.
  • Due to anti-bacterial benefits, there are less pests & flies in the washrooms.
  • The application of the nanocoating is preventing existing fixtures from further discolouration from contact with other chemicals such as cleaning chemicals.
  • There has been a reduction in the usage of cleaning chemicals which is used by the facility management team.
  • It works as an extra protective shield for existing fixtures to avoid further damage & thus enhances the aesthetics to ensure a clean washroom experience for travellers.

It is recommended to use a hydrophobic and oleophobic transparent coating specifically developed for glass and ceramic surfaces for new installations and washrooms, with a lifespan of up to 5 years. Further, the emphasis is now on purely wet cleaning and avoiding the use of chemical solvents and cleaners due to the enhanced stain repellency and antimicrobial benefits of Vetro Power’s Nano-Tech Protection.
